Momo — traditional Nepali dish

About Momo

Momo is Nepal's most iconic dish - delicate steamed dumplings filled with spiced minced meat (buffalo, chicken, or goat) or vegetables, served with a fiery tomato-based dipping sauce called achar. Originating from the Himalayan regions, momo has become the most popular Nepali street food and is found in every Nepali restaurant in Australia. Variations include fried momo (kothey), pan-fried momo (C-momo), and momo in soup (jhol momo).

How to Make Momo

Prep: 40 min Cook: 15 min 24 momos ≈ 340 kcal/serving

Ingredients

500g minced chicken, buff or goat (or 500g finely chopped cabbage and paneer for veg)
2 cups plain flour plus water for the dough wrappers
1 large onion, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves and 1 tbsp ginger, minced
2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil
1 tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, salt and pepper
2 tomatoes, 2 dried red chillies, 1 tbsp sesame seeds (for the achar)
Coriander leaves, finely chopped

Instructions

1Knead flour and water into a firm dough; rest 30 minutes, then roll into small circles.
2Mix the mince with onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil and spices.
3Place a spoonful of filling in each wrapper; pleat and seal into half-moons or round bundles.
4Steam in a greased steamer for 12–15 minutes until the wrapper is firm and translucent.
5Roast the tomatoes and chillies, then blend with sesame seeds, salt and water into a smooth achar.
6Serve hot with the tomato-sesame achar.

Finding Momo in Perth

Use the restaurant listings above to compare locations, menus, opening hours and contact options before travelling. A listing indicates that the business is associated with Momo, but recipes, portion sizes, fillings, spice levels and daily availability can differ. Contact the restaurant directly if you need vegetarian, vegan, halal or allergy-related information, and confirm whether the dish is available for dine-in, takeaway or delivery on the day you plan to order.

What to ask before ordering

Ask how Momo is prepared, what accompaniments are included, and whether advance ordering is recommended for groups. Prices and menus can change, so treat directory details as a discovery guide rather than a guaranteed current menu. You can also browse all Nepali restaurants in Perth or compare other Nepali dishes.

For catering or a large takeaway order, provide the number of guests and required collection or delivery time. Confirm quantities, packaging, reheating instructions, dietary labels and the final price in writing. This is especially useful when ordering several dishes for a shared meal or community event.
