Warm fermented millet drink of the eastern hills
Tongba is the traditional warm alcoholic drink of the Limbu people of eastern Nepal — fermented millet served in a wooden vessel, sipped through a bamboo straw as hot water is repeatedly poured over the grain. It is drunk in cold months and at gatherings as a gesture of welcome. While licensed venues in Australia rarely serve it, tongba appears at community gatherings and cultural events of the Kirat community.
