Haritalika Teej — हरितालिका तीज — is the great women's festival of Nepal, three days of feasting, fasting, red saris and song dedicated to Goddess Parvati and the wellbeing of family. It is the festival of dar khane — the grand feast the night before the fast — and of women gathering in red to sing, dance and celebrate together.
In Australia, Teej has become one of the diaspora's biggest event seasons: dar khane dinners, Teej programs and dance nights run through August and September in every major city, and community organisations host large celebrations that draw hundreds.
