About Momo

Momo is Nepal's most iconic dish - delicate steamed dumplings filled with spiced minced meat (buffalo, chicken, or goat) or vegetables, served with a fiery tomato-based dipping sauce called achar. Originating from the Himalayan regions, momo has become the most popular Nepali street food and is found in every Nepali restaurant in Australia. Variations include fried momo (kothey), pan-fried momo (C-momo), and momo in soup (jhol momo).

How to Make Momo

Ingredients

  • 500g minced chicken, buff or goat (or 500g finely chopped cabbage and paneer for veg)
  • 2 cups plain flour plus water for the dough wrappers
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves and 1 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, salt and pepper
  • 2 tomatoes, 2 dried red chillies, 1 tbsp sesame seeds (for the achar)
  • Coriander leaves, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. 1Knead flour and water into a firm dough; rest 30 minutes, then roll into small circles.
  2. 2Mix the mince with onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil and spices.
  3. 3Place a spoonful of filling in each wrapper; pleat and seal into half-moons or round bundles.
  4. 4Steam in a greased steamer for 12–15 minutes until the wrapper is firm and translucent.
  5. 5Roast the tomatoes and chillies, then blend with sesame seeds, salt and water into a smooth achar.
  6. 6Serve hot with the tomato-sesame achar.
