About Dal Bhat

Dal Bhat is the staple meal of Nepal, consisting of steamed rice (bhat) served with lentil soup (dal) and accompanied by vegetable curries, pickles (achar), and sometimes meat curry. It's the everyday meal for most Nepalis and is traditionally eaten with the hands. How to Make Dal Bhat

Ingredients

  • 1 cup masoor or black lentils (dal)
  • 2 cups basmati rice (bhat)
  • 1 onion, 2 tomatoes, 4 garlic cloves, 1 tbsp ginger
  • 1 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 2 tbsp ghee or mustard oil
  • Fresh spinach or saag, and potatoes for tarkari
  • Achar (pickle) and papad to serve

Instructions

  1. 1Pressure-cook the lentils with turmeric and salt until soft (3–4 whistles); whisk smooth.
  2. 2Temper ghee with cumin seeds, garlic, onion and tomato; pour into the dal and simmer 10 minutes.
  3. 3Cook the rice until fluffy.
  4. 4Make a quick tarkari: sauté potato and spinach with garlic, turmeric and chilli.
  5. 5Serve the dal and tarkari alongside rice with achar and papad — mix the dal through the rice to eat.
