About Chatpate

Chatpate is the Nepali street snack of puffed rice (muri) tossed with boiled potatoes, chickpeas, onions, green chillies, coriander, lemon juice and a spicy achar dressing — mixed to order and eaten with a folded paper spoon. Cheap, loud with flavour and impossible to eat slowly, chatpate is the taste of school afternoons and bus parks in Nepal, and Nepali food trucks in Australia have brought it back.

How to Make Chatpate

Ingredients

  • 4 cups puffed rice (muri)
  • 1 boiled potato, diced; 1/2 cup boiled chickpeas
  • 1 onion, 2 green chillies, coriander, all finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp mustard oil
  • 1 tsp chaat masala, chilli powder, salt
  • Crushed papad or bhujia to top

Instructions

  1. 1Mix potato, chickpeas, onion, chilli and coriander in a large bowl.
  2. 2Add lemon juice, mustard oil, chaat masala, chilli and salt; toss well.
  3. 3Add the puffed rice last and toss quickly so it stays crisp.
  4. 4Serve immediately in paper cones or bowls, topped with crushed papad.
