Canadian screens currently have one of Nepali cinema's biggest titles of the year: Acharya, directed by and starring Nikhil Upreti, is playing in Canadian theatres following its September 25 release — with listings ed by JustWatch including Cineplex availability.
The film
Acharya is Upreti's latest as director-star: a Nepali action-drama running approximately 178 minutes — nearly three hours of the big-canvas filmmaking he's staked his career on. The cast includes Purnika Sijapati, Deep Raj Rana and Pramod Agrahari. Full details, trailer and the Australia-side screenings are on our Acharya movie page.
Why Upreti matters
Nikhil Upreti is effectively the inventor of the modern Nepali action hero — the leading man who built an entire genre lane when Nepali cinema had almost none, and sustained it across two decades while the industry around him cycled through phases. A new Upreti film is the closest thing to a guaranteed theatrical event for the diaspora's mass audience — the crowd that wants scale, action and a star vehicle rather than festival-circuit drama.
Where it's playing in Canada
Nepali commercial titles in Canada run the mainstream South Asian cinema circuit — Cineplex locations in the GTA and Vancouver metro carry most releases, with screening counts that flex by opening weekend demand. The JustWatch listing aggregates current availability; check Cineplex directly for your nearest location and showtime, and our Canada Nepali movies guide for the full slate.
The bigger October slate
Acharya leads a remarkable month for the market — Baa: Ek Yoddha follows October 15, with Jhingedaau 2 and Pension Patta in the international rollout. The film also plays across the diaspora simultaneously — it's the same October window as the UAE release, evidence of how synchronised Nepali film distribution has become across Canada, the Gulf and Australia.
