On an island where Nepalis are now the third-largest third-country national group, Dashain has become a genuinely visible festival. Vijaya Dashami falls on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 for Cyprus's ~20,000-strong Nepali community — and the celebrations have a character unlike anywhere else in Europe.
Cyprus Dashain 2026 key dates
• Ghatasthapana: Saturday, October 11
• Fulpati: Friday, October 17
• Maha Ashtami: Sunday, October 18
• Maha Navami: Tuesday, October 20
• Vijaya Dashami / Tika: Wednesday, October 21
• Kojagrat Purnima: Sunday, October 25
The dates follow the 2083 BS holiday calendar. Cyprus is only about 3 hours 15 minutes behind Nepal, so Kathmandu-set muhurats transfer more comfortably than for the UK or Portugal — check Nepal vs Nicosia time for the exact offset.
A festival shaped by women
What makes Cypriot Dashain distinctive is who celebrates it. The corridor is powered predominantly by women — domestic workers and carers who make up the majority of the island's Nepali population, as documented in our Cyprus community report. That shapes the festival: tika ceremonies organised by and for women, sister networks standing in for extended family, and Deusi-Bhailo adapted to employer-household schedules rather than neighbourhood rounds.
Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca host the main gatherings, typically scheduled on the weekend nearest tika day since most workers can't take a Wednesday off. Community associations arrange shared tika for members whose families are back in Nepal — the diaspora's oldest tradition, borrowed siblings and borrowed elders, kept alive on the island.
Looking ahead to Tihar
Bhai Tika lands on Wednesday, November 11, with Tihar running November 8–11. For festival dates year-round, our Dashain and Tihar guides carry the full detail, and Aus Nepali Patro s every date on the BS calendar. Workers sending money home for the season can check the EUR to NPR rate.
