Malta's Nepali Workforce Grows — but Recruitment Fraud Warnings Mount
Malta took 6,334 Nepali labour approvals in FY 2025/26 — but workers paying NPR 1 million for fake jobs are raising the alarm. What to verify first.

Malta has become one of Europe's fastest-growing Nepali worker destinations — 6,334 labour approvals in fiscal year 2025/26, per Department of Foreign Employment data, with 288 more workers travelling in just the first four months of FY 2026/27. The Mediterranean island's hospitality, construction and care sectors have absorbed the flow — and notably, Malta is one of the few European destinations where institutional recruitment channels actually operate, alongside Jordan and limited Romania intake.
The fraud warning
The corridor's growth has a costly shadow. New Business Age reports the case of Ramchandra Pokharel from Somadi, Palpa, who travelled to Malta via India after paying nearly NPR 1 million to a consultancy — only to find the promised job didn't exist. "Fourteen of us joined the same company through a consultancy in India, yet the work we received does not match what was promised," he told the outlet. His case is not isolated: labour migration expert Rameshwar Nepal warns that the dominance of individual-visa channels across Europe has sharply increased exposure to fraud and excessive recruitment fees.
Why workers still choose Malta
Despite the risks, the fundamentals attract: EU labour standards, English as a working language, year-round hospitality demand, and a compact island geography where community networks form quickly. Malta is also among the countries — with Croatia, Poland, Portugal and Spain — where Kathmandu has opened bilateral labour agreement talks, which would eventually formalise recruitment and cap the fees workers pay.
How to protect yourself
Anyone weighing a Malta offer should take three steps before paying anything: verify the employer and vacancy through the Department of Foreign Employment; insist on seeing the actual contract terms in writing, in a language you understand; and treat any demand to route through a third country — India, in the Palpa workers' case — as a red flag.
