Cyprus — an island of under a million people — has quietly become one of the biggest Nepali diaspora stories in Europe. 13,069 Nepalis received labour approval for Cyprus in fiscal year 2025/26, making it the second-largest European destination after Romania, per Department of Foreign Employment figures reported by Nepal All.
A community of 20,000 — and third-largest in the country
The Nepali community in Cyprus is estimated at around 20,000 people, making Nepalis the island's third-largest third-country national group, according to the Cyprus Mail. For a country of Cyprus's size, that is a remarkable demographic footprint — Nepalis are now a visible, established part of Cypriot working life rather than a transient presence.
The women-led corridor
What distinguishes Cyprus from every other European corridor is its gender profile: the migration flow is predominantly women, recruited largely for domestic work, elderly care and hospitality roles. Where Romania's surge is construction and manufacturing-heavy and male-skewed, Cyprus represents one of the few labour markets where Nepali women outnumber men — a reversal of the historical Gulf pattern that deserves attention from policymakers ing women's foreign employment safety and remittance behaviour.
The island's appeal is practical: English is widely spoken, employers sponsor permits for chronic shortages in care and service sectors, and the Mediterranean climate and pace of life read as familiar rather than alien. Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca host the densest clusters.
Growth without a safety net
There is no Nepal–Cyprus bilateral labour agreement yet. Kathmandu has opened talks with several European states — Croatia, Poland, Portugal, Malta and Spain among them — but Cyprus-specific protections are still pending, leaving workers dependent on individual contracts and employer goodwill. Community organisations and honorary consular channels fill the gap where they can, but anyone weighing a Cyprus offer should verify it through the Department of Foreign Employment before paying fees.
