Portugal has been a Nepali destination long before the current Europe surge made headlines — but the numbers are now catching up with the community's maturity. 7,900 Nepalis received labour approval for Portugal in fiscal year 2025/26, per Department of Foreign Employment figures reported by Nepal All, placing it among the top five European corridors. Another 152 workers travelled in the first four months of FY 2026/27 alone.
Lisbon's Nepali heartland
Walk through Lisbon's Martim Moniz district and the Nepali presence is unmistakable — Himalayan restaurants, groceries stocking beaten rice and gundruk, remittance counters and phone shops serving a community that has been settling here since the early 2010s. The neighbourhood is sometimes described in local coverage as Lisbon's Little Nepal. Beyond the capital, the Algarve's tourism economy and the agricultural belts of the interior and islands employ a growing share of arrivals.
Why Portugal works
Portugal's appeal is structural: a shortage economy that has historically regularised migrant workers more readily than most EU states, relatively accessible pathways to residency, and a hospitality and agriculture sector permanently hungry for labour. It's also a Schengen member — a Portuguese residence card opens the same document-free zone that's made Romania and Croatia magnets. Kathmandu has opened labour-agreement talks with Portugal alongside Croatia, Poland, Malta and Spain, per New Business Age — formalisation that would protect future arrivals from the fee gouging that plagues the individual-visa route.
An established community, not a frontier one
What separates Portugal from the newer corridors is depth. Nepali community organisations, festival celebrations, football tournaments and restaurant ownership all predate the current surge — many of Portugal's Nepalis are a decade or more into settlement, with children in Portuguese schools.
