Greece was a Nepali destination before it was fashionable. Through the 2010s, a steady stream of Nepali workers — many undocumented or on seasonal permits — worked Greek agriculture, construction and tourism. Today's Europe-wide surge, which saw 53,951 Nepalis take new labour approvals for 24 European countries in FY 2025/26's first eleven months, is giving the corridor fresh momentum with roughly two thousand approvals annually in recent data.
Where the work is
The pattern differs from Romania's factories or Malta's hotels: Greece absorbs Nepali labour into agriculture — seasonal harvest work in the regions — alongside tourism and hospitality on the islands and in Athens. The seasonal structure means the community is fluid, with workers rotating between harvests, tourist seasons and, for some, onward movement into the Schengen zone Greece anchors.
The regularisation question
Greece's long-running debates over migrant regularisation have periodically opened windows for undocumented workers to formalise — a history Nepali arrivals know well. There is no Nepal–Greece bilateral labour agreement, and Athens-d community organisations remain the primary safety net for workers navigating permits, employer disputes and the bureaucracy of seasonal status. As with every corridor in the current surge, the Department of Foreign Employment should be the first checkpoint before any offer is paid for.
Festivals in the Aegean
Athens hosts the community's festival life — Dashain tika gatherings, Tihar programmes and cultural events run through informal networks rather than established associations, reflecting the workforce's dispersed, seasonal character. For the community and families back home, our Nepal–Athens time converter, EUR to NPR rate page and the Aus Nepali Patro calendar cover the essentials.
