From Study Permit to PR: The PGWP → Express Entry Pathway for Nepali Students in Canada

Study permit → PGWP → Express Entry: the real Canada PR pathway for Nepali students in 2026, including the tightened field-of-study rules.

Ask any Nepali student why Canada and the answer eventually lands on the same word: PR. The pathway still exists — but it's narrower than the recruitment-pipeline version suggests. Here's how it actually works in 2026.

Step one: the PGWP

Finish an eligible program at a designated learning institution and you qualify for the Post-Graduation Work Permit — an open permit whose length generally matches your program, up to three years. Two catches worth planning around: recent rule changes added field-of-study requirements for some non-degree programs (check eligibility before enrolling, not after graduating), and a PGWP is issued once in a lifetime — using it on a short program can burn your one shot.

Step two: the skilled year

Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class needs one year of skilled Canadian work (TEER 0–3). That means the job you take on a PGWP matters — retail and hospitality shifts pay rent but don't accrue eligible experience unless the role itself is classified skilled. Students who plan backwards from a skilled job — picking programs whose co-ops and graduate hiring feed TEER 0–3 occupations — move through the system far faster.

Step three: the draw

Express Entry is a points pool — age, education, Canadian experience and language scores convert to a CRS number, and draws select above a cutoff. The levers that move a Nepali applicant's score most: a Canadian credential (already have it), IELTS/CELPIP retakes (the cheapest points available — each language band jump is worth real CRS), category-d draws (French, healthcare, trades and STEM draws run lower cutoffs), and provincial nominee programs which add 600 points outright.

The honest framing

Cutoffs have risen and policy has tightened — study permit caps, field-of-study rules and draw composition all shifted recently. The pathway rewards planners and punishes assumption: students treating the degree itself as the product are struggling; students treating it as step one of a three-step system are still landing PR.
