Your First Month in Canada as a Nepali Student: SIN, Banking, Health Cover and the Rest
SIN, no-fee student banking, provincial health cover traps and the document folder — the first-month checklist for Nepali students landing in Canada.

The first month in Canada sets up everything after it — and most of it has to happen roughly in this order. Here's the sequence that saves Nepali students weeks of circular errands.
Week one: SIN and phone
Social Insurance Number first — it's free, issued by Service Canada online or in person with your passport and study permit, and nothing else works without it: no legal pay, no tax file, sometimes not even a rental application. Same week, get a Canadian SIM. The big carriers are expensive; the flanker brands (Fido, Koodo, Public Mobile, Chatr) run on the same networks for far less — a fact most newcomers learn after signing a pricey plan.
Week two: banking
Every major bank — RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC — runs a student account with no monthly fee, typically bundled with an international transfer perk. Bring passport, study permit and proof of enrolment. Ask specifically for the newcomer/student package and ask whether they waive fees on remittances to Nepal; some do, some quietly don't. Pair the account with a remittance comparison habit — the CAD to NPR rate moves enough that the difference between services is real money.
Health cover — the trap
Health insurance is where provincial differences bite. Some provinces cover international students under public health after a waiting period (BC's MSP covers eligible students after the wait; Alberta similarly), while Ontario does not — there, universities enrol you in UHIP or a private equivalent. Whatever the arrangement, it activates on dates, not arrival: know exactly when yours starts and what the gap cover is. An emergency room visit in the gap is a five-figure lesson.
The rest of the list
• Housing: photograph everything on move-in; get receipts for deposit payments; understand your provincial tenant rights — they're stronger than most students assume.
• Driving: if you plan to drive, start the licence process early — see our licence conversion guide for how your Nepali licence can shorten the graduated process.
• Documents: one folder — passport, permit, enrolment letter, lease, SIN letter. You'll produce the same set repeatedly for months.
And the community
Canadian Nepali student associations exist at most big campuses — worth finding in week one, not month six. They know which landlords are fair, which jobs hire fast, and when the community Dashain celebration is. Coordinate the time difference with home using Nepal vs Toronto time.
