One of the first practical shocks for Nepali students landing in Canada: your Nepali licence can't simply be swapped for a Canadian one. Canada has licence exchange agreements with a list of countries — and Nepal isn't on it. But your driving history is far from worthless, and used correctly it can cut months off the process.
The graduated licensing reality
Canadian provinces run graduated licensing: in Ontario that's G1 (written) → G2 (road test) → full G (final road test), with a mandatory 8–12 month wait between stages. British Columbia runs L → N → full; Alberta runs Class 7 → Class 5 probationary → full. As a new resident you can typically drive on your Nepali licence plus an International Driving Permit for a short grace window — roughly 60–90 days depending on the province — before you're required to hold a local licence.
Where your Nepali licence still helps
Here's the part most newcomers miss: provinces credit documented foreign driving experience. In Ontario, presenting a valid Nepali licence (with an official translation if requested) plus proof of driving history can let you skip straight to the G2 or even attempt the full G road test without serving the full waiting periods. The same principle applies in BC and Alberta — the original licence, an English translation, and in some cases a letter or record from Nepal's transport authority strengthen the claim. Bring all of it, not just the card.
The practical sequence
1. Before leaving Nepal, get an International Driving Permit and keep your Nepali licence current — an expired card weakens the experience claim.
2. On arrival, book the written knowledge test immediately — the wait times, not the studying, are the bottleneck.
3. Present your Nepali licence and documents at the licensing office to claim experience credit toward the shortened path.
4. Budget for the road tests — failing one means rebooking and fees, and examiner slots in cities like Toronto and Vancouver fill weeks out.
Documents that matter
Keep your passport, study permit, proof of address and Nepali licence together — licensing offices ask for all of them. For the rest of the settlement checklist — SIN, banking, health coverage — see our first month in Canada guide, and the rules on how much you can legally work are in our work-hours explainer. Official detail lives at Canada's foreign licence page and your provincial licensing authority (ServiceOntario, ICBC, or Alberta Registry).
