Your First Month in the USA as a Nepali Student: SSN, Banking and the Health Insurance Trap

SSN needs a job offer, banking is easy, and health insurance is the trap — the first-month USA checklist for Nepali students.

The American first month has a different logic from Canada's or the UK's: less paperwork upfront, more systems that silently punish the unprepared. The order that works:

The SSN paradox

You can't get a Social Security Number without authorised employment — and many jobs want the SSN first. The loop breaks on campus: land any on-campus job or assistantship, get the employer letter, then apply at Social Security with passport, I-20, I-94 and the letter. The number arrives in ~2 weeks and stays yours for life — it becomes the key to credit history, apartment applications and everything else America runs on. No job yet? The SSA ineligibility letter substitutes at DMVs and banks.

Banking: easier than expected

Opening a US bank account needs only passport, visa documents and a local address — most students have one within days. Pick a bank with a campus branch or a student account (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo all run them, fee-free with enrolment proof). Your debit history here quietly builds the financial footprint you'll need for a credit card — the real prize, since US credit history is everything.

Health insurance: the non-negotiable

America is the only major study destination where a single uninsured emergency-room visit can cost more than a semester's tuition. Most universities mandate health insurance — either their own plan or proof of equivalent coverage. Whatever the waiver rules are, understand them before waiving the university plan for a cheaper private one: coverage gaps in US healthcare are catastrophic, not inconvenient. This is the one line item to never economise on.

Housing paperwork

Landlords want credit history you don't have — the fixes are a guarantor, a larger deposit, or university-affiliated housing first. On move-in, photograph everything and keep the lease — it's your proof of residence for DMV, banking and immigration paperwork.

The folder

Passport, I-20, I-94 printout, visa, admission letter, lease — one folder. America runs on the same five documents everywhere. Then get the state ID or licence so the passport stays home. Work rules are in our F-1 explainer; for calls home, Nepal vs New York time and the USD→NPR rate.
