Malaysia's large Nepali community heads into November with its second great festival. Tihar 2026 in Malaysia runs Saturday 7 November to Wednesday 11 November, with Kukur Tihar and Laxmi Puja on Sunday 8 November and Bhai Tika on Wednesday 11 November.
Malaysia Tihar 2026 dates
• Kag Tihar: Saturday, 7 November
• Kukur Tihar & Laxmi Puja: Sunday, 8 November — evening puja around Malaysian sunset (~7 PM MYT)
• Gai Tihar: Monday, 9 November
• Govardhan Puja / Mha Puja: Tuesday, 10 November
• Bhai Tika: Wednesday, 11 November
Malaysia is 2 hours 15 minutes ahead of Nepal, so a late-morning Kathmandu sahit lands around 1:45 PM Malaysian time — comfortably inside a working day, which is why most Malaysian Nepali families do the ceremony in the early morning or evening; the worldwide sahit er has the official 2083 time converted, and Nepal–Kuala Lumpur time shows the offset.
A committee structure built for distance
Malaysia's Nepali festival life runs on a distinctive model: NRNA Malaysia's state-level regional committees. The country's Nepali population is spread across the peninsula — Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang, the industrial corridors — so rather than one national event, the regional committees run their own Deusi Bhailo programmes. The Johor committee's Deepawali Deusi Bhailo last season — hosted at a Nepali restaurant in Gelang Patah — is the template: community venue, open invitation to every Nepali in the state, and the explicit purpose of keeping Nepal's festival culture alive for a community that is mostly workers far from their families.
That worker-majority composition shapes Malaysian Tihar's texture: the festival's public life happens in the Nepali restaurants and community spaces of the industrial zones, while families with settled households keep the home observances — lamps on the balcony on Laxmi Puja night, tika with siblings on the day itself or over call.
