Hong Kong's Nepali community — one of Asia's oldest, built on generations of Gurkha service and the families who stayed after the handover — celebrates Tihar in early November. Tihar 2026 in Hong Kong runs Saturday 7 November to Wednesday 11 November, with Kukur Tihar and Laxmi Puja on Sunday 8 November and Bhai Tika on Wednesday 11 November.
Hong Kong Tihar 2026 dates
• Kag Tihar: Saturday, 7 November
• Kukur Tihar & Laxmi Puja: Sunday, 8 November — evening puja (~5:50 PM HKT)
• Gai Tihar: Monday, 9 November
• Govardhan Puja / Mha Puja: Tuesday, 10 November
• Bhai Tika: Wednesday, 11 November
Hong Kong runs 2 hours 15 minutes ahead of Nepal — a late-morning Kathmandu sahit converts to around 1:45 PM Hong Kong time. The worldwide Bhai Tika sahit er carries the official 2083 announcement with conversions; Nepal–Hong Kong time shows the offset live.
A community older than the diaspora
Hong Kong's Nepali festival tradition is unique in this list because it predates the modern diaspora: the community descends from Gurkha soldiers stationed in the territory and their families, concentrated historically around the former barracks areas of Shek Kong and the wider New Territories, and now spread across the city. That depth shows at Tihar — Hong Kong's Deusi Bhailo tradition is genuine community practice passed through generations, not a revived custom, and the festival fortnight brings association gatherings through the community's established organisations including NRNA Hong Kong.
For remittances home, the HKD–NPR rate is on the exchange page; Hong Kong updates land on the Hong Kong desk.
