The rules for working on a UK Student visa are simpler than Canada's — but the edge cases still catch Nepali students every intake. Check your own visa, not the headline
Two things change the limit: below-degree-level study drops the cap to 10 hours, and some institutions or placements carry different conditions — your eVisa/BRP and your CAS state the actual terms that apply to you. Students below degree level at private colleges should verify before accepting any job.
The NI number comes first
Working legally requires a National Insurance number — the UK equivalent of Canada's SIN or Australia's TFN. Apply free at GOV.UK with your passport and eVisa share code. You can technically start work while the application processes if you can prove the right to work — but get it moving immediately; payroll without it creates a paper mess, and some employers won't touch you until it arrives.
What's allowed — and what isn't
The 20 hours covers employment and placements that aren't a formal part of assessment. What Student visa holders cannot do: be self-employed, take a permanent full-time job, work as a professional sportsperson or entertainer. Freelancing and gig apps sit in the self-employment grey zone — Deliveroo-style contractor work is generally treated as self-employment and is off-limits on a student visa, a rule many students learn about too late.
The vacation multiplier
Official vacation periods — the university's actual published breaks, not just when your classes end — unlock unlimited hours. Nepali students routinely use Christmas, Easter and summer for full-time warehouse, hospitality and retail blocks that fund a semester's living costs.
