The single most valuable thing a UK degree comes with isn't the parchment — it's the Graduate Route visa: two years of unrestricted work rights after graduating (three for PhD), no employer sponsorship, no job offer, no salary threshold. For Nepali students it's the breathing room that turns a study visa into a career.
What it actually gives you
Unlike the Student visa, the Graduate Route removes the strings: any job, any hours, self-employment allowed, switch employers freely, leave and re-enter the UK. You must apply from inside the UK before your student visa expires, after your university confirms you've completed the course. The cost is the application fee plus the Immigration Health Surcharge for the period — budget for it, because the IHS portion runs into the thousands for two years.
What it doesn't do
Two limits matter. The Graduate Route can't be extended — when the two years end you need a different visa or you leave. And time on it doesn't count toward the five-year settlement clock the way Skilled Worker years do — which is why the standard play is to convert to a sponsored Skilled Worker visa during the Graduate Route window rather than running it to zero. Employers who'd never sponsor a fresh graduate will sponsor someone who's already proven themselves on the Graduate Route — that's the mechanism.
The Strategic play for Nepali graduates
The two years divide roughly: year one for landing a role with a licensed sponsor (the Home Office publishes the register — check a company is on it before investing in them), year two for the Skilled Worker switch. Health and care roles have the deepest sponsorship infrastructure — relevant given the UK–Nepal bilateral nurses' agreement already in place — but sponsorship exists across engineering, tech and hospitality management too.
