The American pathway is the least predictable of the big four destinations — it's part planning, part lottery — but thousands of Nepali students navigate it every year. Here's the honest map.
Stage one: OPT
Graduation unlocks 12 months of Optional Practical Training — work authorisation in your field with no employer sponsorship needed. STEM graduates stretch it to 36 months with the extension. Stage two: the H-1B lottery
The H-1B is the standard work visa — and it's a literal lottery: registrations far exceed the ~85,000 annual cap, so each year is one chance at roughly one-in-three odds. STEM OPT holders effectively get multiple lottery attempts across the extension. Employers file the petition; the employee carries no risk beyond timing. Master's-degree holders enter a second, better-odds pool — one reason graduate degrees dominate Nepali enrolment strategy.
Stage three: the green card — where Nepal has an edge
Here's the counterintuitive part: the employment-d green card queue is backlogged by country of birth, and because India dominates the queue, Indian-born applicants wait decades — while Nepali applicants face dramatically shorter waits, often just the standard processing time. It's one of the few places in US immigration where a Nepali passport is an outright advantage.
The backup doors
The lottery isn't the only route: cap-exempt H-1Bs exist for universities, nonprofits and research institutions (no lottery at all — the insider move), O-1 visas cover exceptional-ability candidates, the Diversity Visa lottery remains open to Nepal — a genuine green card lottery that Nepalis famously win at high rates — and marriage/family routes exist for those they apply to.
The honest framing
Plan on the lottery failing: take OPT seriously, prefer employers with sponsorship records, target cap-exempt institutions deliberately, and enter the DV lottery every year it's open.
