Janai Purnima in Australia
Janai Purnima 2027 is August 17 — sacred thread day, Raksha Bandhan and Kwati Punhi combined. Rituals, kwati recipe and Australia celebrations.
Janai Purnima by City
Janai Purnima — जनैपूर्णिमा — falls on the full moon of Shrawan (August) and packs three festivals into one day. Brahmin and Chhetri men renew their sacred thread (janai); sisters tie rakhi threads on brothers' wrists for Raksha Bandhan; and every kitchen simmers kwati — the nine-bean sprout soup that gives the day its other name, Kwati Punhi.
At Kumbheshwar in Patan and faraway Gosaikunda, pilgrims bathe and shamans (jhakri) hold their great annual gathering. In Australia, the day is marked at home — the thread renewal, the rakhi, the pot of kwati — a quiet anchor of the August calendar.
