One of the biggest Nepali films of the year has reached Australia. Pension Patta (पेन्सन पट्टा), written and directed by Maotse Gurung, began its Australian theatrical run on 21 September 2026, just ten days after its Nepal release on 11 September — one of the fastest international rollouts for a Nepali film this year.

The film is being screened across Australia by Backup Events and D'Boyz Entertainment, who acquired the Australia/New Zealand rights. Nepal distributor is RR Films.

Confirmed Australian sessions

Screenings in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra have been flagged by the distributors as coming soon — the Pension Patta movie page lists every confirmed cinema and session as it is announced.

What the film is about

At its heart, Pension Patta is a story about a Lahure pension — the document that sustains so many Gurkha families. Rajan and his mother Chhalu are already struggling when Rajan's father, Ganga Bahadur, dies. With a moneylender demanding repayment of the family's debt, their last hope is the pension document left as collateral.

But when they go to claim it, the name on the pension does not match Chhalu's. What looks like a clerical problem sends Rajan on a search that pulls him away from home — and turns the film into a much larger story about identity, greed, sacrifice and the people we become when family is on the line.

Why it matters to the diaspora

Maotse Gurung — whose earlier films Purano Dunga and Dayarani connected strongly with audiences at home and abroad — has described Pension Patta as an honest look at the Lahure community: not just the prestige of the uniform, but the family relationships, expectations and hardships behind it. For Australian Nepalis, many of whom have fathers, grandfathers or uncles who served, it is a story that lands close to home.

The film also marks one of the final screen appearances of veteran actor Sunil Thapa.

Cast & crew

The ensemble stars Dayahang Rai and Gaumaya Gurung, with Wilson Bikram Rai, Buddhi Tamang, Pashupati Rai, Luniva Tuladhar, Suraj Tamu, Raj Kaucha Magar and the late Sunil Thapa. Music by Manoj Thapa Magar, Shiva Baraili and Suraj Tamu; cinematography by Sushan Prajapati; background score by Rohit Shakya.

Box office & international rollout

Pension Patta earned roughly Rs. 1.5 crore in its first five days in Nepal and continues to perform strongly. Australia and Spain (Barcelona) were the first international markets; the UK, Hong Kong, the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Europe and the Gulf are in the pipeline.
