Upstate New York's Nepali community has set its Dashain date. The Albany New York Nepalese Society (ANNS) will hold its annual Dashain celebration on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 5 PM to 10 PM at Shaker Middle School, 475 Watervliet Shaker Road in Latham.
A member-priced community evening
ANNS is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and its pricing structure reflects a member-supported community event rather than a commercial concert. The published admission tiers are:
• ANNS member adults: $25
• Children 12–17: $15
• Children 6–11: $10
• Visiting parents: $20
• Member guests: $25
• Non-member adults: $35
• Without RSVP: $35
The society has set an RSVP deadline of October 10, and the non-RSVP rate exists to push early registration — useful context for families deciding whether to attend. ANNS is also inviting community members to submit cultural performance items for the evening programme, a format that turns the celebration into a showcase for local children and youth rather than relying on touring artists.
What a society-run Dashain looks like
Community Dashain evenings in smaller US cities follow a familiar shape, and ANNS's format is built around it: a collective blessing or tika-style opening, a programme of songs, dances and short skits performed by members' children, dinner, and the society's annual announcements. The entertainment budget goes to making the evening affordable rather than flying in headline artists — which is why the ticket prices are a fraction of what the touring concert shows charge, and why the RSVP deadline actually matters for catering headcounts.
For families newer to the Capital Region, ANNS membership is the other lever worth knowing about: the $25 member rate versus $35 non-member rate is deliberately structured to nudge attendance into membership, and members' children typically get priority on the performance roster.
Shaker Middle School's auditorium-style setup is the standard venue for Capital Region community events — practical for an evening program, with straightforward parking and accessible entry off Watervliet Shaker Road. Latham sits between Albany, Troy and Schenectady, so the venue draws from all three cities' Nepali households rather than just Albany proper.

October 17 sits two days before Vijaya Dashami in the United States — see our explainer on Dashain 2026 dates for American Nepalis — which makes the timing ideal for families who want a community tika-style blessing without waiting for the weekday. For anyone coordinating with relatives in Nepal, the Nepal–New York time difference page shows how the dates shift across time zones.
The upstate scene
Albany's Nepali population is smaller than New York City's but organised: ANNS runs regular programmes through the year and has become the default point of contact for new families moving into the Capital Region. Their Dashain evening is the year's biggest gathering — expect potluck-scale food, children's performances, and the community announcements that set up the society's winter calendar.
ANNS has also announced a separate Tihar celebration on November 7. More listings are on the ANNS events page and our USA news desk.
