Naya Barsha — नयाँ वर्ष, the Nepali New Year — falls on the first of Baisakh in the Bikram Sambat calendar, mid-April in the Gregorian calendar. It is a festival of fresh starts: new year wishes, family gatherings, community events and the great chariot festival of Bisket Jatra in Bhaktapur, which marks the same days.

For the diaspora in Australia, the Nepali New Year is one of the biggest community event nights of the year — concerts, dinner programs and cultural celebrations run across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth through the middle of April.
