Teej 2026 was celebrated by Nepali women and communities around the world in August and September 2026. The festival, dedicated to the well-being of husbands and families, combined fasting, singing, dancing and community gatherings in cities across the diaspora.
What is Teej?
Teej is a Hindu festival celebrated primarily by women. Many observe a day-long fast without food or water, dress in red, apply henna, sing traditional songs and pray for marital happiness and family prosperity. In Nepal, Teej is one of the most important women’s festivals of the year.
How the diaspora celebrated in 2026
Major celebrations were reported in:
- Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin
- United States: New York, New Jersey, Texas, California, Virginia
- United Kingdom: London, Aldershot, Reading, Colchester
- Canada: Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton
- New Zealand: Auckland and Christchurch
- Gulf: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar
Music and events
Several artists toured diaspora cities for Teej 2026, including Rachana Rimal, who performed across Australia. Community organisations hosted large-scale Teej Melas with food stalls, dance performances and mehndi stalls.
Fundraising twist
In Canada, some Teej events were cancelled or redirected after the Nepal floods. The Nepali Canadian Women’s Society of B.C. redirected $15,000 from a sold-out Teej event to flood relief, showing how the festival became a moment of both celebration and solidarity.
Looking ahead to Teej 2027
Teej 2027 is expected to fall in late August or early September. Diaspora communities typically begin planning three to four months ahead, especially for large-scale concerts and mela events.
