Japan’s Dependent residence status (家族滞在, kazoku taizai) allows a supported spouse or child of a resident holding an eligible status to live in Japan. For Nepali residents bringing family to Japan, the starting point is the sponsor’s exact residence status and evidence that the family can be supported.
Correction — 20 October 2026: An earlier version incorrectly included Technical Intern Training among eligible sponsoring statuses and gave an unsupported monthly income figure. Those statements have been removed. This is general information, not individual immigration advice; check the current official checklist before applying.
Who can sponsor a spouse or child?
The Immigration Services Agency (ISA) lists eligible statuses including Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Skilled Labour, Professor, Researcher, Highly Skilled Professional, Specified Skilled Worker (ii), and Student. This is not the complete list: check the official Dependent status page against the status printed on your residence card.
Technical Intern Training and Specified Skilled Worker (i) are not listed as eligible sponsoring statuses for this route. Student status is listed, but financial support and other applicable conditions still need to be demonstrated. Do not assume that every course or school qualifies.
The official description refers to a supported spouse or child; it does not describe this route as a general visa for parents or other relatives. Ask ISA about the appropriate route for a different family relationship.
Income and financial support
The official checklist asks for evidence of the sponsor’s occupation and income, or other evidence that living expenses can be covered. It does not give a universal monthly salary figure guaranteeing approval. We therefore do not publish a minimum-income estimate.
For an employed sponsor, the checklist includes occupation evidence and resident-tax assessment and payment certificates. For other circumstances, it lists evidence such as a bank balance or scholarship certificate. Ask the relevant immigration office what to provide if tax certificates are not yet available.
Documents for a Certificate of Eligibility application
Use the current ISA checklist rather than treating this summary as exhaustive. It includes:
- The application form, a photograph meeting the required specifications, and the applicable return-envelope arrangements
- Evidence of the family relationship, such as a marriage or birth certificate
- A copy of the sponsor’s residence card or passport
- Evidence of the sponsor’s occupation, income or other financial support
Follow ISA’s current instructions for Japanese translations and document validity. Check the separate embassy visa checklist for applicants in Nepal; do not assume every document needs legalisation or a certified translation unless the relevant authority requires it. Additional evidence may be requested for an individual case.
Application steps for family members outside Japan
- Confirm that the sponsor’s residence status is eligible and read the official checklist.
- Prepare the relationship and financial-support evidence and apply for a Certificate of Eligibility through the applicable ISA procedure.
- Allow for variable processing times; do not treat an estimated waiting period as a guarantee.
- If a COE is issued, follow the Japanese embassy’s current visa procedure in Nepal. A COE is not itself a visa or a guarantee of entry.
Before making travel plans
Confirm the visa outcome, suitable housing, health-insurance arrangements and local education options. Dependent status does not by itself authorise unrestricted paid work; check the applicable permission requirements with ISA before accepting work.
