Beyond cricket, Nepali sports abroad is expanding into football, volleyball and badminton. In 2026, community organisations across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia are hosting tournaments that bring Nepali athletes and fans together.
Football tournaments
Nepali football clubs and community groups organise indoor and outdoor tournaments throughout the year. Common formats include:
- Seven-a-side community tournaments
- Inter-state or inter-city leagues
- Dashain and New Year Cup competitions
- Youth development clinics led by former Nepali players
Major hubs include Sydney, Melbourne, London, Toronto, New York and Dallas, where Nepali teams compete against each other and in mixed-community leagues.
Volleyball tournaments
Volleyball has a strong following among Nepali communities, particularly in the United States and Canada. Annual tournaments often coincide with national holidays or festivals:
- Memorial Day weekend tournaments in the USA
- Canada Day and summer-league events in Canada
- Dashain and Teej Cup events in Australia
Teams are often organised by state, city or ethnic/regional association, and events attract players from across a region.
Badminton tournaments
Badminton is popular among Nepali families and younger players. Community tournaments are held in:
- UK Nepali community centres and sports halls
- Australian state badminton facilities
- US Nepali association annual gatherings
- Canadian multi-sport community events
Why sports matter for the diaspora
Sports tournaments are about more than competition. They:
- Keep young Nepalis connected to community networks
- Provide a healthy outlet outside work and study
- Create intergenerational gatherings around festivals
- Raise funds for community causes and Nepal-d charities
- Build visibility for Nepali organisations in host countries
How to find events
Most tournaments are announced through Facebook community groups, WhatsApp networks and local Nepali association pages. Because many are informal, checking these channels regularly is the best way to find registration deadlines and venues.
