Nepal Government Warns Against Fraudulent Flood Relief Fundraisers Using Personal QR Codes

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has issued a public warning against unauthorized collection of financial donations in the name of victims of the devastating Bhotekoshi flood in Rasuwa, as rescue and relief operations continue in the affected areas.
The warning comes as individuals and groups have reportedly begun collecting donations for flood victims through social media and other digital platforms, including by sharing personal or unauthorized QR codes.
Government Statement
A massive flood swept through the Bhotekoshi river in Rasuwa at around 8:40 AM on Wednesday, causing significant loss of life and property along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors. Amid the disaster, the NDRRMA, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has clarified that only authorized entities should collect donations.
The authority has urged the public to only contribute through official government mechanisms, particularly the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund, which is the authorized channel for disaster relief donations. The fund is audited annually and can only be used for rescue, treatment, relief, rehabilitation, and infrastructure restoration.
How to Protect Yourself
The NDRRMA and Nepal Police Cyber Bureau recommend the following:
- Only donate to verified channels — PM Disaster Relief Fund, NRNA, Nepal Red Cross, UNICEF, Caritas
- Do not scan personal QR codes shared on Facebook, WhatsApp, or other social media
- Verify the organization before donating — check for official registration and website
- Report suspicious fundraisers to Nepal Police Cyber Bureau
- Warn your community about fraudulent fundraising attempts
