The Gurkha connection is the foundation of the modern Nepali community in the United Kingdom. For more than 200 years, soldiers from Nepal have served in the British Army, creating a unique diaspora that now includes veterans, their families and descendants settled across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

History of Gurkha service

Gurkhas first served the British Crown during the Anglo-Nepalese War (1814–1816), when impressed British officers began recruiting Nepali soldiers. Since then, Gurkhas have fought in both World Wars, the Falklands Conflict, the Gulf Wars, Afghanistan and many other operations.

The Gurkha regiments became famous for discipline, bravery and loyalty. The motto “Better to die than be a coward” reflects the reputation they built.

Settlement in the UK

Until the early 1990s, most Gurkhas retired to Nepal. In 2004, following a long campaign, Gurkhas who retired after 1997 were granted the right to settle in the UK. A further campaign led to broader settlement rights for many pre-1997 veterans in 2009.

This policy change transformed the UK’s Nepali population. Towns such as Aldershot, Farnborough, Colchester, Reading and Ashford became major Gurkha settlement areas.

Community institutions

The Gurkha community built a network of organisations that support veterans and families:

Cultural impact

Gurkha settlement brought Nepali food, festivals, language and religion to British towns. Dashain, Tihar, Teej and Nepali New Year are now celebrated in community centres across the country. Nepali restaurants, groceries and businesses have followed the population.

Challenges

Despite their service, some Gurkha veterans and families have faced challenges including:

  • Pension inequality compared to British counterparts
  • Access to healthcare and housing
  • Language barriers for older family members
  • Isolation and mental-health issues among veterans

Why this matters

The Gurkha story is not just military history; it is the origin story of the UK’s Nepali diaspora. Understanding this legacy helps explain why towns like Aldershot have such strong Nepali community institutions today.
