Frequently asked questions

What is panchang?

Panchang (पञ्चाङ्ग, "five limbs") is the daily Hindu almanac covering tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga and karana. It is used to pick auspicious times for ceremonies, travel and vrat.

What is tithi and why does it matter?

A tithi is a lunar day — the time the moon takes to move 12° from the sun. Festivals, vrat (fasting days), shraddha and birthdays in the Nepali calendar all follow tithi, which is why their AD dates shift every year.

What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal is a daily ~90-minute period considered inauspicious for starting new ventures, travel or ceremonies. It falls in a fixed eighth of daylight that depends only on the weekday — the timing above uses the Nepal convention.

Are these times for Nepal or Australia?

Tithi and paksha are calendar values for the Nepal civil date (NPT). Rahu Kaal is shown in the standard Nepal convention. For personal ceremonies in Australia, confirm the local-equivalent timing with a pandit.

Tithi and paksha follow the Nepal civil calendar (NPT, UTC+5:45). For ceremonies abroad, consult a pandit for local-time equivalents — find Nepali pandits in Australia. Ritual dates: tithi calendar · muhurat · panchak.
