KARRATHA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA — A community-focused climate awareness and environmental program has brought together members of the Nepali community, local representatives and volunteers in Karratha, highlighting the growing importance of climate action and sustainable living in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
Organised by the Nepalese Association of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment in Australia (NEPAFE), the program focused on climate change, environmental challenges in the Pilbara, sustainable environmental management and practical steps communities can take to protect the environment.
A total of 27 people took part in the program, which also included representatives from the City of Karratha.
Understanding Climate Change at a Local Level
The program began with a welcome from local coordinator Pooja Bhandari, followed by an introduction to NEPAFE, its previous activities and upcoming initiatives by Dr Jagadish Timsina.
Dr Timsina delivered a presentation on climate change and sustainable environmental management, explaining how changing climate conditions can affect agriculture, the environment and local communities.
Rather than focusing only on the global picture, the discussion looked at environmental challenges being experienced across the Pilbara and Karratha region, along with practical ways individuals and communities can adapt and contribute to environmental protection.
The session also encouraged participants to share their views and discuss what can realistically be done at a local level.
City of Karratha Highlights Local Sustainability Efforts
The program also featured Laurenda Timmins, Sustainability Lead at the City of Karratha, who spoke about local environmental and sustainability initiatives being undertaken across the Karratha area.
Her presentation highlighted the importance of community participation in creating a more sustainable future and demonstrated how local government, community groups and residents can work together on environmental initiatives.
Participants also discussed how stronger collaboration between local organisations and the wider community could help make environmental programs more effective and meaningful.
A Climate Awareness Quiz Brings Everyone Together
The educational sessions were followed by a climate and environmental awareness quiz, adding a more interactive element to the program.
Facilitated by a team including Mani Bhusal, the quiz saw enthusiastic participation from attendees and tested their knowledge of climate change, sustainability and environmental issues.
The winners were:
- Swastika Adhikari — First Place
- Ajay Bhatt — Second Place
- Nabin Kafle — Third Place
- Ajay Ghimire — Fourth Place and Consolation Award
Certificates and prizes were presented to the winners, while all participants received certificates of participation.
From Climate Awareness to Planting Trees
One of the most practical parts of the program was a tree-planting activity, organised with the support of the City of Karratha’s Parks and Gardens team.
Led by Nicole from the Parks and Gardens team, participants got involved in planting trees and taking part in hands-on environmental activities.
The activity carried an important message: environmental protection does not have to remain a topic of discussion. Small actions taken by individuals and communities can also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment.
For participants, the tree-planting session provided an opportunity to turn the lessons from the day into direct community action.
Community Contributors Recognised
Several people who played an important role in organising and supporting the program were also recognised for their contributions.
Mani Bhusal, Pooja Bhandari and Amrit Lawoju were presented with letters of appreciation by NEPAFE for their efforts in helping make the program possible.
The closing session focused on future opportunities for collaboration in climate awareness, environmental protection and sustainable development.
There was also discussion around potential future partnerships between NEPAFE, R2R, B&D Foundation, City of Karratha and other local community organisations to deliver joint environmental and community programs.
A Local Initiative with a Bigger Message
The Karratha program reflects how community-led initiatives can bring global issues such as climate change closer to people's everyday lives.
For the Nepali community in Australia, events like this also provide an opportunity to contribute beyond cultural activities and become involved in broader community, environmental and sustainability initiatives.

The event was coordinated by NEPAFE Vice President Kul Adhikari, with Dr Jagadish Timsina, local coordinators, volunteers and participants contributing to the successful completion of the program.
NEPAFE thanked the City of Karratha, supporting and funding organisations, local community members, volunteers, speakers and participants for their contribution and support.
The organisation also indicated that it plans to continue promoting climate awareness, environmental protection and sustainable development through future community initiatives.
