Tamu Lhosar in Australia
Tamu Lhosar 2026 is December 30 — the Gurung New Year. Community programs, Tamu Selo performances and celebrations across Australia.
Tamu Lhosar — तमू ल्होसार — is the New Year of the Gurung (Tamu) people, falling every year on the 15th of Poush (30 December). Lhosar means "new year"; the Tamu calendar turns through a twelve-year cycle of animals, and each Lhosar welcomes the new year's sign.
In Nepal the day brings community gatherings, traditional dress, feasting and the beloved Tamu Selo dance performances. In Australia — home to one of the world's largest Gurung diasporas — Tamu Lhosar programs are among the biggest community events of the December calendar in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
