Sonam Lhosar in Australia

Sonam Lhosar 2027 is February 7 — the Tamang New Year. Khapse, community programs and celebrations across Australia.

Sonam Lhosar — सोनाम ल्होसार — is the New Year of the Tamang, Hyolmo and related Himalayan communities, falling on the new moon of Magh (late January or February). "Sonam" means the harvest or merit — the festival honours the year's yield and opens the new cycle of the twelve-animal Tamang zodiac.

Homes are cleaned, khapse pastries are fried, families visit monasteries and elders are honoured. In Australia, the Tamang community — one of the diaspora's largest — celebrates with major Lhosar programs in Sydney and Melbourne, drawing thousands for music, dress and feasting.
