Maha Shivaratri in Australia
Maha Shivaratri 2027 is March 6 — the great night of Shiva. Pashupatinath tradition, fasting, night vigils and Nepali temple events in Australia.
Maha Shivaratri — महाशिवरात्रि, "the great night of Shiva" — falls on the dark night of Falgun (February–March) and is one of the most intense observances in the Hindu calendar. Devotees fast through the day, keep vigil through four prahars of the night, and worship Shiva with bilva leaves, milk and water offerings.
In Kathmandu, Pashupatinath becomes a sea of humanity — hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, ash-covered sadhus, bonfires burning through the night and the temple grounds open till dawn. In Australia, Nepali communities mark the night with temple programs, bhajan vigils and community fasting.
