Maghe Sankranti 2026 Australia — Events, Dates & Celebrations

Maghe Sankranti 2027 is January 15 — til ko laddu, chaku, yam and the Tharu Maghi New Year. Traditions and community events in Australia.

Maghe Sankranti — माघे संक्रान्ति — falls on the first of Magh (mid-January), the day the sun enters Capricorn and begins its northward journey. It marks the turning of the coldest season, and Nepal celebrates it the way the cold deserves: with warm, rich, energy-dense food — sesame laddu, chaku molasses, ghee, boiled yam and sweet potato.

For the Tharu community of the Terai, the same day is Maghi — the Tharu New Year — celebrated with feasts, gift exchanges and community gatherings. In Australia, Maghe Sankranti lands mid-summer, but the tradition holds: families gather for ghiu-chaku, til ko laddu and the first khichadi of the season.
