Jitiya Parva 2026 is October 4. The Terai festival where mothers fast for their children — rituals, parana food and celebrations among Nepali Australians.

Jitiya — जितिया, also called Jivitputrika — is the great fasting festival of the Nepali Terai and Mithila. For one full day and night, mothers keep a nirjala vrat — a fast without even water — praying to Jimutavahana for the long life and wellbeing of their children. It is one of the most demanding observances in the entire calendar, and one of the most loved.

Among Australia's large Madhesi community, Jitiya has become a fixture of the festival calendar — women gather for the pre-fast jhor meal, keep the fast together and break it with the traditional parana of fish and rice.
