Indra Jatra in Australia
Indra Jatra 2026 begins September 25. Learn about the living goddess Kumari's chariot procession, Lakhe dances, and how the Nepali community celebrates in Australia.
Indra Jatra by City
Indra Jatra — येँया, Yenya in Nepal Bhasa — is the grandest festival of the Kathmandu Valley's old city. It honours Indra, the Vedic god of rain and harvest, and runs for eight days through the heart of Kathmandu: a sacred wooden pole (Indradhvaja) raised at Basantapur, the Akash Bhairav mask displayed, masked Lakhe dancers in the streets, and above all the chariot procession of the Kumari — the living child-goddess — pulled through the old city over three days.
For Nepalis in Australia, Indra Jatra is the moment the diaspora's Newari community comes together — samay baji ceremonies, cultural nights and Kumari Puja observances run in Sydney and Melbourne through late September, a few days before Dashain begins.
