Gyalpo Lhosar in Australia
Gyalpo Lhosar 2027 is March 9 — the Sherpa and Tibetan New Year. Guthuk, khapse, monastery prayers and celebrations in Australia.
Gyalpo Lhosar — the "King's New Year" — is the Tibetan-calendar new year celebrated by Sherpa, Tibetan and Himalayan communities, falling on the new moon of Falgun (February–March). It is the most important festival of the mountain communities, running across a week of feasting, family and prayer.
The eve brings guthuk — a nine-ingredient soup with dough dumplings hiding symbolic fortunes — and the days after bring monastery visits, new clothes, khapse by the plateful and cups of butter tea and chhaang. In Australia, Sherpa and Himalayan associations host Lhosar dinners and cultural nights each March.
