Ghode Jatra in Australia

Ghode Jatra 2027 is April 6 — Kathmandu's horse festival at Tundikhel. History, Gurumapa legend and Nepali community observance in Australia.

Ghode Jatra — घोडेजात्रा, the "festival of horses" — is Kathmandu's ancient spring parade, held on the dark moon of Chaitra at Tundikhel ground. Cavalry horses race and perform before the head of state, in a tradition older than the nation itself.

The legend says the demon Gurumapa is buried beneath Tundikhel — and the thundering hooves each year keep him down. For the Newar community the same day brings Lubhu's own horse race and neighbourhood feasts. It is a smaller observance in Australia but a beloved piece of Kathmandu heritage for the diaspora.
