2026 is a landmark year for the Japan–Nepal relationship: September 1, 2026 marks exactly 70 years since the two countries formally established diplomatic relations, and Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has built an official anniversary programme spanning cultural events, education, arts, tourism and community exchange across both countries.
A relationship older than its anniversary
The formal date understates the connection. As Nepal's own Foreign Ministry documents, the relationship's roots reach back to Ekai Kawaguchi, the Japanese Buddhist monk who travelled to Nepal in 1899 seeking Buddhist scriptures — and whose writings later introduced Nepal and Lumbini to generations of Japanese readers. Nepali students were arriving in Japan for higher education as early as 1902, more than five decades before ambassadors were exchanged.
Formal relations began on September 1, 1956 — making Japan one of Nepal's oldest continuous bilateral relationships. The intervening seven decades built a partnership that runs through development cooperation, infrastructure, tourism (Japanese trekkers were among the earliest foreign mountaineering visitors), and — most visibly today — one of Asia's largest Nepali diaspora communities.
The anniversary programme
The official programme covers events throughout the year in both directions: Nepal-linked cultural performances and exhibitions in Japanese cities, exchange and educational programmes, tourism initiatives and community activities. Individual listings on the ministry's page include events scattered across Japanese prefectures — not only Tokyo and Osaka but regional cities like Tomioka in Fukushima, home of the Winds of the Himalayas Concert on October 4, which appears on the official commemoration list.
For Nepal's community in Japan — now one of the country's most established South Asian diasporas — the anniversary adds an institutional to a year that already includes the Nepal Festival Tokyo, community Dashain-Tihar programming covered in our Japan festival guide, and a landmark Nepali film selection at the Tokyo Gap-Financing Market.
What 70 years looks like today
The relationship has also shown its practical side this year: Japan's emergency assistance following Nepal's devastating floods — documented in our report on Japan's September relief measures — is the modern expression of a partnership the ministries describe as aimed at deepening mutual understanding. Why the diaspora should care
Anniversaries of diplomatic relations are usually embassy matters — dinners, statements, commemorative stamps. This one is different in kind: the programme explicitly includes community and cultural exchange, which means the diaspora isn't an audience for the anniversary but a participant in it. A Nepali performing at a listed anniversary event, a student attending an exchange programme, a family taking Japanese neighbours to a Nepal-related exhibition — the ministry's programme formalises what the community has been building informally for years.
It also arrives at the moment Japan's Nepali population is large enough to sustain the role: the community that runs the Odaiba festival, the district melas and the city-level Dashain programmes is exactly the community a 70-year relationship produces. The anniversary, in that sense, is less about two governments than about the people who now live inside the relationship daily — and the event map across Japan's prefectures shows how far that daily connection now reaches.
