Japan's Nepali community doesn't only celebrate the autumn Dashain. Earlier this year, the Baglung Society Japan organised the second Chaitrastami Mela / Chaitra Dashain 2026 in Tokyo — a two-day event that drew significant participation and kept alive a festival most diaspora calendars skip.

The lesser-known Dashain

Chaitra Dashain — also called Chaitra Ashtami or Chaite Dashain — is the spring counterpart of the great autumn festival, falling in the Nepali month of Chaitra. In Nepal it's a major observance particularly in western districts like Baglung, but in the diaspora it's frequently overshadowed by the big October celebration. The Baglung Society Japan's mela is the community's way of refusing that erasure: a two-day gathering built around religion, culture and social connection.

Per the organisers' stated aims, the event exists to preserve Nepali traditions, promote Baglung's cultural identity, connect Nepalis living in Japan, and introduce traditional culture to younger generations — the last goal being the one that makes these regional-identity events load-bearing for the community's future.

District societies as community backbone

Like Britain's jilla samajs, Japan's Nepali community organises partly along district lines — Baglung being one of the districts with an established Japan presence. The second edition of the mela indicates the format has become an annual fixture rather than a one-off experiment, and the participation reported by Ratopati suggests the Baglung network in Japan is one of the more active district communities.

The event also included recognition of singer Khadka with the Baglung Ratna Samman — the district community's own honour, which is part of how these societies maintain connection with figures from home.

Why coverage of smaller festivals matters

Chaitra Dashain melas rarely make English-language coverage, but they're where the community's actual texture lives: district associations doing unglamorous cultural-maintenance work, children learning traditions their parents left behind, and the social glue that makes the bigger events possible. For Japan's wider festival calendar, our Dashain 2026 guide covers the autumn season, and the Japan desk s community events as they're announced through the year.

Baglung in Japan

The district-society model deserves a sentence of explanation for outsiders: Nepal's hill districts each produced their own migration networks, and in Japan those networks formalised into samajs — membership organisations that collect dues, run festivals, provide mutual aid and honour figures from home. Baglung's is among the more visible, partly because Baglung itself is a district whose cultural identity (the Ghorakali traditions, its own folk repertoire) is strong enough to sustain standalone programming. When the samaj gathers for Chaitra Dashain, it's performing the same role a hometown guthi would — continuity machinery for a dispersed population. The Chaitra edition's second year suggests the format has become the society's spring anchor alongside the autumn national celebrations, giving Baglung's Japan community two fixed points on the annual calendar.

The Baglung Ratna Samman deserves a note too: district-community honours like this — a literal "Jewel of Baglung" award presented to a figure from the homeland — are how the samajs keep the relationship reciprocal rather than nostalgic. Honouring a visiting artist at a Tokyo mela both rewards the person and reminds the room that the connection runs to a specific district, not an abstract Nepal. It's the same mechanism Britain's Gulmi Jilla Samaj uses — recognition as a form of ongoing relationship.
