Japan's Nepali community — now one of Asia's most established — begins its biggest fortnight of the year in October. Dashain 2026 runs through mid-October in Japan, with Vijaya Dashami tika on October 21, and the season is already filling with community events from Tokyo to Osaka.

Japan Dashain 2026 dates

• Ghatasthapana: Saturday, October 11
• Fulpati: Sunday, October 18
• Maha Ashtami: October 19
• Vijaya Dashami / Tika: Wednesday, October 21
• Kojagrat Purnima: October 24

The Embassy of Japan's Nepal mission lists its official Dashain holidays as October 19–22 — consistent with the festival-calendar dates, and matching the UK's tika day (see our UK guide). As always, families splitting blessings between Kathmandu and Tokyo should decide early which date to follow — the Nepal–Japan time difference page explains the offset, and the Nepali festival calendar shows the Nepal-side tithi dates.

Where the community is celebrating

The season's confirmed events:

• Far-Western Nepali Cultural Evening — October 11 in Tokyo, October 12 in Osaka. Regional identity plus flood-relief fundraising. Full details.
• Winds of the Himalayas Concert — October 4, Tomioka, Fukushima. An official 70th-anniversary event. Details.

Japan's community is spread far wider than the capital — Osaka, Nagoya, Gunma, Saitama, Fukuoka, Hiroshima and Kyoto all have active Nepali populations — and most local Dashain programming is announced through the associations and community groups in each city rather than national listings. Expect the usual pattern: tika ceremonies for children, cultural performances, communal meals and the member events that fund the associations' year-round work.

Why the midweek tika matters

October 21 is a Wednesday, which means — as everywhere in the diaspora — the community gatherings cluster on the weekends of October 17–19 while families observe the actual tika midweek. The Ghatasthapana weekend (October 11–12) is when households plant their jamara; in Japan's small apartments it's the tradition most faithfully kept.

We're ing every announced Japanese celebration on the Japan desk. For families sending dakshina home, the JPY–NPR rate is on our exchange page.

Dashain in a Japanese apartment

The practical texture of Japanese Dashain differs from the diaspora elsewhere in ways worth noting. Housing is smaller, so the collective jamara pots and family altars get miniaturised; work schedules are tighter, so the midweek tika day splits into morning blessings before shifts and -call ceremonies across the three-hour gap with Kathmandu (which, mercifully, lands both sides in daylight); and the community associations take on the extended-family role more completely — the aunt who organises tika for every child in the prefecture group is functionally doing what a joint household would do at home. Japan also has one advantage no Western diaspora shares: the dates align with the homeland's almost in real time, so nothing gets shifted a weekend for everyone's benefit. For the community's own framing of the season, the Far-Western evening shows how a festival date doubles as the year's organising occasion.

Planning note for families: tika day falls on a Wednesday, so most households will do the morning blessing before work or school and save the proper visit — grandparents' hands, elder relatives across the prefecture — for the following weekend. If you're choosing one event to anchor the fortnight, the Ghatasthapana-weekend cultural evening is the confirmed one; expect prefecture associations to announce their own Dashain programs through October.
