Japan’s Nepali community wrapped up the second Chiba Nepal Cultural Festival 2026 at Funabashi Keibajo over the weekend of September 19–20. The two-day festival, organised by NRNA Chiba, was the prefecture’s largest Nepali cultural event of the year and drew families from across the greater Tokyo area.
Held at the former racecourse grounds in Funabashi, the festival ran from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM each day with free entry. Visitors could sample Nepali dishes such as momo, dal bhat, sel roti and Newari snacks, watch traditional dance and musical performances, browse handicraft stalls and take part in cultural dress photo opportunities.
The event was explicitly designed to strengthen Nepal–Japan friendship while preserving Nepali cultural identity among the diaspora. Representatives from the Nepal Embassy in Japan, NRNA Japan and local Japanese cultural groups attended, and the programme included welcome remarks from community leaders on the 70th anniversary of Japan–Nepal diplomatic relations.
Funabashi was chosen for accessibility: it is roughly 35–50 minutes from central Tokyo by car, with train access through the Keisei line and parking available on site. The flat, open racecourse layout also made it possible to set up multiple performance stages, food courts and stall rows without the space limitations of an inner-city park.
The festival is part of a wider calendar of Nepali events in Japan. Earlier in the year, NRNA Japan held the 15th Nepal Festival at Shiokaze Park in Odaiba, Tokyo, over July 18–20, which remains the largest annual Nepali festival in the country. Regional events in Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and other prefectures are also becoming more common as the Nepali population expands beyond the Tokyo metropolis.

The second edition's success also carries a structural lesson for Japan's community calendar: prefecture-level festivals can draw a regional audience without competing with the flagship Odaiba event, because they serve a different function — a local day out for the families who actually live in Chiba, Saitama and the eastern suburbs rather than a capital-wide showcase. With the 70th-anniversary year adding official events in cities like Tomioka on top of the community's own, Japan's Nepali calendar is now genuinely distributed — a pattern our Japan events map s across the prefectures. The season continues with the October Dashain programming.
For Chiba specifically, the festival's growth into a second edition points to where the prefecture's Nepali population now sits in the community hierarchy: large enough to sustain a two-day flagship, close enough to Tokyo to borrow the capital's organisers and performers, and distinct enough to need an event of its own rather than folding everything into Odaiba. The free-entry model matters the same way it does at the Tokyo festival — it keeps the gates open to Japanese neighbours, which is how a prefecture mela becomes a cultural-exchange event rather than an internal gathering. That public-facing dimension is the detail the 70th-anniversary remarks at the festival were really about: on the community's own turf, in front of a mixed audience, the relationship gets performed rather than merely announced.
