Bhai Tika falls on Wednesday, 11 November 2026, the fifth and final day of Tihar. For the complete Kaag Tihar, Kukur Tihar, Laxmi Puja, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Tika calendar, visit the primary Tihar and Bhai Tika 2026 Australia page.
What Bhai Tika celebrates
Bhai Tika honours the bond between sisters and brothers. Traditions vary between families and communities, but the ceremony commonly includes a protective boundary, oil, flowers, garlands, seven-colour tika, blessings, food and an exchange of gifts or dakshina. Newar families may observe the related Kija Puja tradition.
Prepare the ceremony items
- Seven-colour tika or the colours used by your family.
- Makhmali or other garlands where available.
- Walnuts, fruits, sweets, flowers and a diya.
- A puja plate, water, oil and protective offerings.
- Gifts or dakshina for siblings.
Some ingredients can be difficult to find at short notice. Use the Nepali grocery directory to compare shops by Australian city, but call the store to confirm seasonal stock before travelling.
When siblings live in different cities
Work schedules, university classes and interstate distance can make a same-day ceremony difficult. Families often agree on a practical gathering time, travel on the closest available day, or connect by when a sibling is in Nepal or another country. If following a specific auspicious time, confirm the local Australian-city guidance with a trusted priest or panchang.
Food for Bhai Tika
The family meal may include sel roti, sweets, fruits, meat or vegetarian curries, rice, lentils and favourite dishes chosen for siblings. Confirm allergies and dietary requirements. Larger family or community gatherings can compare enabled Nepali caterers and event venues.
Gift planning
A thoughtful gift does not need to be expensive. Clothing, sweets, books, practical household items, personalised keepsakes and support for education or travel are common choices. If sending a parcel or money overseas, arrange it early enough to account for delivery and processing times.
Checklist for 11 November
- Confirm the gathering place and time.
- Prepare tika, garlands, offerings and gifts.
- Organise calls with siblings overseas.
- Plan food and dietary alternatives.
- Take photographs only after everyone is comfortable.
