Check the confirmed observance dates: see the Chhath Puja 2026 date, Sandhya Arghya and sunrise guide.
Chhath Puja 2026 runs from Friday, 13 November to Monday, 16 November. Sandhya Arghya is on Sunday, 15 November and Usha Arghya is on Monday, 16 November. Visit the primary Chhath Puja 2026 Australia date and events page for current community listings.
The four-day sequence
- 13 November: Nahay Khay and the beginning of purification.
- 14 November: Kharna, followed by the demanding nirjala fast.
- 15 November: Sandhya Arghya to the setting sun.
- 16 November: Usha Arghya to the rising sun and completion of the fast.
Finding a suitable ghat in Australia
Do not assume that public-water access is automatically permitted. Community organisers should confirm council or venue permission, safe entry points, lighting, parking, toilets, waste disposal, accessibility and emergency arrangements. Beaches, rivers and lakes can have currents, slippery surfaces, tides, wildlife and changing weather.
Use local sunrise and sunset
Arghya follows the local setting and rising sun. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart and Darwin have different sunrise, sunset and daylight-saving conditions. Confirm the selected location’s local time close to the event rather than copying a Kathmandu or Indian time. Follow guidance from the event organiser and a trusted local panchang.
Prasad and puja preparation
Families may prepare thekua, fruits, sugarcane and other offerings according to their tradition. Maintain cleanliness throughout preparation and transport. Check seasonal ingredients with a Nepali grocery store near you and confirm stock before travelling.
Health and safety
Chhath includes prolonged fasting and standing near water. Participants should consider their health circumstances and seek appropriate medical advice where needed. Organisers should provide drinking water for non-fasting attendees, first-aid access, safe crowd movement and supervision for children.
Community event checklist
- Confirm permission for the water location.
- Publish exact access and gathering instructions.
- Check local sunset and sunrise times.
- Arrange lighting for early-morning access.
- Plan parking, waste removal and accessibility.
- Prepare a wet-weather and emergency alternative.
