Frozen momo should normally be cooked straight from the freezer. Thawing can make the wrapper sticky, split the dumpling and change the filling texture. Before using any method below, check the instructions on your packet because wrapper thickness, filling size and whether the momo is raw or pre-cooked all affect timing.
If you are still choosing a packet, compare brands and fillings in the Australian frozen momo directory.
Best method: steam frozen momo
Steaming is the most reliable method for most frozen Nepali momo.
- Line the steamer basket with baking paper, cabbage leaves or a light coating of oil.
- Leave space between each momo so steam can circulate.
- Bring the water to a steady boil, then place the covered steamer above it.
- Steam until the wrapper is glossy and the filling is hot all the way through.
- Rest for one minute before lifting them, because very hot steam can stick to the wrapper.
| Packet type | Starting guide | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small 10–16 piece packet | 10–14 minutes | Check the product instructions first |
| Standard frozen momo | 12–16 minutes | Longer for thick wrappers or large pieces |
| Large or bulk frozen momo | 15–20 minutes | Rotate baskets if stacking |
Raw meat fillings must be cooked thoroughly. If you use a thermometer, the centre should reach at least 75°C. If you do not have a thermometer, cut one open: the centre should be steaming hot with no raw-looking meat.
Make soup momo
Soup momo turns frozen dumplings into a full meal. Prepare a light broth with garlic, ginger, tomato, turmeric, cumin, timur or chilli. Add vegetables if you like. Cook the soup first, then add frozen momo and simmer gently according to the packet timing. Do not boil aggressively or the wrappers may burst.
Make jhol momo
For jhol momo, steam the frozen momo separately. Blend tomato, sesame, peanuts or roasted soybean, garlic, ginger, chilli, timur and warm water into a smooth sauce. Heat the sauce, season it, then pour it over the steamed momo just before serving. Keeping the momo and jhol separate preserves the wrapper texture.
Air fryer frozen momo
Air frying creates a firmer, crispier surface rather than a traditional steamed texture. Some packets work better than others, especially thicker wrappers.
- Preheat to about 170°C.
- Lightly brush or spray the momo with oil.
- Cook for 8–12 minutes, turning once.
- Check the centre carefully and add a few minutes if needed.
For a softer result, briefly steam the momo first and finish in the air fryer for colour. Do not air fry frozen momo that must remain soft and juicy unless the packet specifically recommends it.
Pan-fried or kothey style
To make a kothey-style result, steam the frozen momo until nearly cooked, then crisp the in a lightly oiled non-stick pan. You can add a small splash of water and cover for one minute to finish heating. This gives a soft top and golden .
Storage and transport tips
- Keep packets frozen until cooking.
- Use an insulated bag when travelling home from a grocery store.
- Return packets to the freezer promptly.
- Avoid refreezing products that have thawed unless the manufacturer says it is safe.
- Check labels for allergens such as wheat, dairy, soy, sesame or nuts.
Serving ideas
Serve momo with tomato achar, sesame achar, chilli sauce, jhol or a simple soy and vinegar dip. For a meal, add a small salad, clear soup or steamed vegetables. If you prefer eating out, browse the cooked momo price guide and Nepali restaurants near you.
