Buddha Jayanti — बुद्ध जयन्ती, known internationally as Vesak — falls on the full moon of Baisakh (May) and marks the three great events of the Buddha's life: his birth at Lumbini, his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, and his parinirvana at Kushinagar — all, tradition says, on the same full moon.

Nepal holds a special pride in the day — the Buddha was born on Nepali soil at Lumbini, and the festival brings processions, lit stupas, monastery prayers and vegetarian feasts.
